Most residential permit applications are submitted online through the Chicago Building Portal portal at buildingpermits.chicago.gov. Processing times for standard residential projects typically run 5–10 business days for standard residential permits.

Chicago Building Code (local amendments to IBC). Chicago requires a Certificate of Occupancy for any new residential space, including finished basements and attic conversions.
